King George Chase - 2005 Result

Kicking King 2005 WinnerKicking King as s seven-year-old Tom Taaffe-trained gelding landed his second-successive King George VI Chase and earned a featured place in the King George Chase Roll of Honour. In winning he joined only a handful of chasers - all of them top-class - to land the King George and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season. His two wins will no doubt be a highlight of the King George Chase history.

His regular pilot. Top King George Chase jockey, Barry Geraghty, was once again on board and the two did as much as they had too, to claim the race off what was only a moderate pace. Runner-up, Monkerhostin, was, in fact, closing on the leader at the finish, although that in no way detract from the winner as Kicking Kick always had his measure. In third place was Impek, and his rider Tony McCoy surprised many by racing prominently, trying to force the pace for much of the way. The disappointment of the contest was 2004 runner-up Kingscliff, who dropped away fairly tamely after clouting the final fence on the first circuit.

The race was very much a case of the King retaining his crown in the King George at the Kempton Park racecourse on Boxing Day and he rewarded his loyal fans by landing the 11/8 odds.

Kicking King was retired earlier this year but his two wins have earned him a place in the King George Chase Legends.
