King George Chase Contenders 2011 - Captain Chris

Captain Chris is one of the most interesting runners in the King George Chase field this season as he steps up in company after a brilliant season as novice last year. The Phillip Hobbs trained horse won the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival back in March and will now go to the King George ready to mix it with the likes of Long Run at the highest level.

We saw Captain Chris have his first run of the season at the start of November when he unseated Richard Johnson in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter. It was a disappointing way for his season to start but he looked as though he would have won and could still be a major player when he arrives at Kempton on Boxing Day. Richard Johnson is a massive admirer of the horse which is enough for most punters and at just seven he still seems to be improving at this level.

Punters wanting to back Captain Chris will have to take something of a leap of faith on Boxing Day, we know he is a classy type but he has yet to run in company like this which does put a question mark over his head. On the plus side, Captain Chris is likely to be still improving and could be anything at this stage  with the Gold cup still on the mind of the connections as we look ahead to March.
