2009 King George Chase - Form Guide

The 2009 King George Chase Form Guide takes a look at some of the principles in the race and will be added to as and when the leading contenders from the King George Chase runners take to the track.

Kauto Star

Kauto StarThe 2006, 2007 and 2008 King George winner is going for a historic 4th victory in the race this boxing day and few would bet against him achieving just that. In the time since his first King George win, Kauto Star has also won two Cheltenham Gold Cups and is one of the great chasers of all time already. A 4th win for Kauto would equal the mark of the legendary Desert Orchid who captured four wins at Kempton during his illustrious career.

So far this season we have only seen Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase where he just beat Imperial Commander into second place by the smallest of margins, that was on soft ground and although he did not look his imperious best he still had enough in the tank to win. His current King George Chase odds are 4/7 and he is favourite.

Imperial Commander

Currently second favourite at around 5/1, Imperial Commander is an improving horse who looks to be coming into his best form at just the right time. He is a Cheltenham Festival winner having won the Ryanair Chase in 2009 and also came in a decent 6th behind Kauto Star in the 2008 King George Chase so knows the track.

However, he looks to have improved once again this time and shocked most with his stunning run in the recent Betfair Chase, most thought he would struggle to stay the trip but he proved them wrong by pushing Kauto Star all the way. He lost by the finest of margins and that gave many the confidence that he was ready for the King George and then possibly the Gold Cup later this season.

Madison Du Berlais

Madison Du Berlais is another who is well fancied in the betting and he is one that has been mixing it in top races for the last couple of years and with some really good wins under his belt. Madison Du Berlais has a Hennessy Gold Cup win from 2008 to his name as well as win over Denman in the Levy board chase. He was well fancied in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2009 but was never involved and came home in 8th which is a question mark against his name.

He is yet to prove that he can mix it with the likes of Kauto Star and Denman when they are on top top form which is a worry for his punters, he looks a great each/way shout in this one but may struggle against Kauto star on top form.

Albertas Run

Albertas Run is a consistent runner at this level and is not without a chance at Kempton on current form, he has run in this company and although has struggled to beat the likes of Kauto Star he has had some good wins in the past. His first run this season was at Ascot in November where he beat Planet of Sound into second place who himself is a very good horse so his connections are full of confidence for the King George. We also saw him at the start of December in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon when he came in a decent third place behind fellow King George contender Deep Purple. May well be the ride of Tony McCoy in the King George as he is his regular partner which will see him attract further support, it maybe a bridge too far for Albertas Run to win but he looks an excellent each/way bet for Boxing Day.

Deep Purple

Deep Purple has shot to the attention of King George punters in recent weeks with as stunning start to the season which has seen his odds slashed all the way in and he now looks a real live contender for the race. His first run of the season was at Wetherby in October when he won the Charlie Hall Chase beating the likes of Tamarinbleu and Ollie Magern who are well respected. We last saw him in the Peterborough Stakes at Huntingdon at the start of March and he was even more impressive on this occasion. He was conceding 10lbs but still beat top class chasers such as Tartak, Albertas Run and Tidal Bay who is a former Arkle winner to claim a reasonably comfortable victory. On this form he is one to watch at Kempton and the bookies agree as they have slashed his odds in half following that win.
