King George Chase - 2006 Result
Odds-on favourite Kauto Star overcame one or two nervous moments to win the 2006 King George VI Chase at Kempton Park Racecourse. He came to the last fence, well clear of the rest of the field, but the 8-13 odds on favourite gave his supporters plenty to worry about as he struggled over, somehow managing to land safely. He regained composure and his momentum and went on to win comfortably from rival, Exotic Dancer.
King George Chase top jockey, Ruby Walsh, who was riding out of his skin, had also recovered from a bad mistake at the fourth last fence, but apart from these errors Kauto still looked a class apart from the rest of the field.
Tony McCoy, who was riding Exotic Dancer had no answer and had to fight hard to keep second place ahead of the improving third horse home, Racing Demon.
Earlier in the race, Ollie Magern had set a strong gallop for the first mile, before Monet’s Garden took up the challenge and went on, but there was no way he could shake off the attention of the first three home who were ready to pounce from three out. Once that had happened, Kauto Star proved why he will be one to highlight in the King George Chase history, as he found yet another gear to go clear two from home.
- 1st – Kauto Star – 8/13
- 2nd - Exotic Dancer – 9/1
- 3rd – Racing Demon – 7/1.
